(Berlin) – Azerbaijani forces abused Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) from the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, subjecting them to cruel and degrading treatment and torture either when they were captured, during their transfer, or while in custody at various detention facilities, Human Rights Watch said today.

“The name of this village is connected with a massacre that the world media don’t write about.” This sentence comes from the book “Ethnic Cleansing in Progress: War in Nagorno Karabakh” published in 2001. It was authored by cross-bench member of the House of Lords of the UK Baroness Caroline Cox and CEO of the Christian Solidarity International John Eibner.
“This village is Maraga.” (marked as “Leninavan” on some Soviet-time maps: this was the name of two united villages – Maragi and Margushevan in the Mardakert region of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic). The tragedy of Maraga hasn’t been covered in the world press. And in Armenian press, Maraga is only remembered in connection with the anniversary of that terrible day – April 10, 1992.

Armenia’s Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan warned Baku that Armenia will strike back harder in the event of an Azerbaijani attack similar to what he called the April 2016 “aggression” against Artsakh.
Speaking to the Russian EADaily Tonoyan warned that in an event of an attack by Azerbaijan, Armenia cannot be in the position to solicit peace and will use its capabilities to retaliate.

The Sumgait tragedy, which occurred 30 years ago, became one of the bloodiest events in the history of the Armenian-Azerbaijani confrontation. It made the “divorce” of the two peoples uncontested.

In order to achieve a breakthrough in the Karabakh settlement, several steps must be taken. This was stated by the vice-speaker of the National Assembly from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, the RPA press secretary Eduard Sharmazanov.

There were plenty of Azeri commentators and officials who criticized Armenian President Serge Sarkisian’s speech at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly last week, but I did not come across any Armenian commentators or government leaders who attacked Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s ugly speech on Sept. 20.

Recently there were two serious scandals one of which was related to the issue of the territories of Artsakh and the other issue is related to the adoption of a concept on developing the Russian language in Armenia.
WASHINGTON—The full U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee adopted a series of provisions as part of its Fiscal Year 2018 (FY18) foreign aid bill on Sept. 7, specifically calling for continued aid to Artsakh and increased assistance to Armenia ($20.7 million), and also imposing weapon and travel sanctions on Turkey and Azerbaijan. Those provisions were supported by the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

BUDAPEST, Hungary (A.W.)—Investigations led by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) have revealed that that several bank transfers—in excess of $7 million—were made to a Budapest bank account around the time the Hungarian government extradited Azerbaijani ax-murderer Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan.
