The life of the indigenous people of Nagorno-Karabakh is in danger – MP Peter van Dalen

Azerbaijan makes the life of the natives of Nagorno-Karabakh unbearable, the indigenous inhabitants of Nagorno-Karabakh, it is in danger. According to “Armenpress”, MP Peter van Dalen, member of the European People’s Party, co-author of the draft resolution “Destruction of the cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh” stated this in the European Parliament.

According to the Dutch MP, Azerbaijani President Aliyev cares only about the well-being of his family, increasing his fortune to billions of dollars, but at the same time grossly violating the rights of the inhabitants of Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Their wealth reaches billions of dollars. What is happening in Azerbaijan is what usually happens under all dictators: corruption, persecution of political opponents, violations of human rights. But that’s not all, because Azerbaijan makes the life of the inhabitants of Nagorno-Karabakh unbearable. This week there were shellings, the gas pipeline was damaged. The life of the inhabitants of Nagorno-Karabakh is in danger, and this danger is increasing every day,” he said.

Peter van Dalen recalled that there are still many missing people in Artsakh, about whom nothing is known.
“It must be said that during the presidency of Aliyev, the cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh is being destroyed, it is being destroyed systematically. Churches, historical buildings, monuments, squares were destroyed. Thus, the cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh can be completely destroyed. The European Parliament is unanimous on this issue. We all agree, we clearly say that we condemn the violence in Azerbaijan, we also condemn the hatred of the Baku government towards Armenians,” said Peter van Dalen, urging UNESCO to send a mission to Nagorno-Karabakh to check the gravity of the situation.

“Mr. presiding, we pray for change, we pray for honesty, for justice, we fight against regimes that destroy people’s lives,” Van Dalen added.

This week, the European Parliament presented a draft resolution on the destruction of the cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh, which condemns the destruction of the historical and cultural heritage of Artsakh and calls on Azerbaijan to preserve the Armenian cultural heritage.

The draft resolution states that during the second Nagorno-Karabakh war, the Azerbaijani armed forces attacked many spiritual sites, such as the Church of the Holy Mother of God in Jrakan and the Church of the Holy Savior in Shushi.

It is emphasized that during the reign of Heydar Aliyev, and then his son Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan destroyed up to 100 Armenian churches, thousands of khachkars, tens of thousands of tombstones and other cultural heritage sites in Nakhijevan. According to the resolution, this also speaks of the likely fate of the Armenian cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh, since the Azerbaijani authorities deny the existence of Armenian cultural sites in Nakhichevan.
